10:30pm – Friday In America

With a range of influences spanning from The Band to The Roots, Friday in America fuse elements of folk, rock, reggae, and hip hop. The result is a menagerie of musical styles – from the heavy rock and funk arrangements of songs like “Hitman” to the stripped-down folk of “Water”. In 2011, the band released their first full length album “Cut the Brakes”, and had the track “Water” featured in the closing scene of the AFI-Fest award-winning film The Hammer, which told the true story of deaf UFC fighter Matt Hamill.

The album’s rock and folk arrangements have garnered comparisons to artists like Jack Johnson and Bruce Springsteen, and have received regular rotation on shows like Scott Regan’s “Open Tunings” (NPR). The band’s love of all music and their ability to write and play across numerous mediums makes for a unique concert experience. They have opened for acts like Max Creek, Ekoostik Hookah, and the Ryan Montbleau Band, and are constantly fusing their disparate influences in a groove-oriented framework.

Captain Lawrence Brew-Ha-Ha

Beer & Food Pairing

Captain Lawrence Brewing Company is an award-winning craft brewery located in Elmsford, NY. The brewery is owned and run by head brewer Scott Vaccaro, a homebrewer since 1995, trained in brewing science at UC Davis.

Many of Captain Lawrence’s beers are strongly influenced by traditional Belgian ale styles, although often with an American twist. Barrel-aging and ales with sourness or flavors contributed by wild yeasts, such as Brettanomyces, and bacteria are also part of their repertoire.

Like many small breweries, Captain Lawrence seeks to be environmentally sensitive, including donating spent grain to a local farmer for use as cattle feed.  Their beers are fermented in stainless steel cylindro-conical vessels.

We will be tasting a plethora of amazing beers, including three pilot beers that have never been tasted here in Rochester!!

YES Tribute: Going For the One

Going for the One is America’s premier Yes tribute, celebrating the music of one of rock history’s most important and inspired bands.

Formed in 2009, the group has performed widely throughout the east coast and midwest, building a reputation for exciting and dynamic shows that capture the energy and power of Yes during their peak years of the 1970s.

Going for the One is not a literal recreation of Yes, but rather a group of talented musicians who strive to preserve and continue the tradition of classic Yes music and performance.  The band’s goal is clear: a celebration of Yes music.

Five Head w/ The Fox Sisters

8pm – The Fox Sisters
The Fox Sisters are a seven-piece rock & roll party outfit from Rochester NY, playing upbeat original numbers, heavily influenced by 60’s R&B.

10pm – Five Head

A 5Head show feels like an illegal party. Not the kind where the cops come because it’s too loud, but the kind that the government might try to ban because it’s too much fun. With seemingly boundless energy, they dish out fiercely solid rhythm section grooves underneath traditionally catchy ska guitar stabs, all while sometimes sweet and sometimes red hot horn harmonies duke it out with front man Rob Reed’s freight train inspired vocals.

5Head fuses elements of 1st and 2nd wave ska with soul and swing to create an upbeat energetic sound that is catchy and feverishly danceable.

From a songwriting perspective, what makes 5Head stand out among the legions of other ska bands is simple: hook. That thing that catches your ear and makes something new seem familiar. From the bass lines to the chord progression, from the vocal melody to the horns lines, hook is king.

5Head has regularly shared stages with ska heavyweights Bim Skala Bim, The Toasters, and The Pietasters.

Hard Logic

Founded in 2001, Hard Logic has never been a traditional jazz fusion group.  By combining old school jazz-fusion’s energy and improvisation with a driving, more contemporary sound the group appeals to a wide range of listeners.  Through the years, groups such as Steps Ahead, Weather Report, Spyro Gyra, and The Brecker Brothers have been significant influences on Hard Logic’s process of melding standard and latin jazz together.

Over a span of fourteen years, the group has developed a large repertoire of original music and has released three full-length CDs.  Charismatic sax-man Paul DeLoria has always been the leader, featured player and songwriter of the precision instrumental ensemble.  Together with keyboardist Greg Gilmore, the two musicians have written the majority of Hard Logic’s original compositions.  In 2008, DeLoria and Gilmore’s song “Crudites” from the band’s 2nd release Group Theory, was awarded first place in Billboard’s World Songwriting Competition.  This recognition was validation that Hard Logic was on its way to creating a distinctive niche within the jazz market.  Two additional musicians, David Pinto and Chris Dembeyiotis, complete Hard Logic with an incredible rhythm section. Outside of the typical responsibilities of a bassist, Pinto’s harmonies, chordal work, and unison lines provide an additional layer of musicality.  Meanwhile, Dembeyiotis lays down an old school vibe with a sense of creativity that is grounded in modern technique.  Together the quartet presents a full sound resembling that of much larger ensembles.

Always exploring new sound palettes, Hard Logic’s 2014 release, The Other Side features guitar prodigy and Eastman graduate Adrian DiMatteo.  The cd also showcases cellist Steve Kanak and percussionist and vibraphonist Bob Accurso.

Hard Logic is currently working on a fourth CD slated to feature a more organic, acoustic, four piece version of the band.  Visit http://www.hardlogic.net. to view documentary footage of the making of their 3rd album, as well as information on their touring schedule, and social media links.

Performance venues have included: The Rochester International Jazz Festival, The Lewiston Jazz Festival (headliners), The Lilac Festival, Webster Jazz Festival, Fairport Canal Days, The Cornhill Festival, Oswego Harbor Fest, Corning Jazz Festival and Naples Grape Festival.

“Hard Logic is…Jazz that takes the spirit of old-school, to modern day progressive fusion…leading the way with solos, that are directed by a rhythm section that could drive a Mac Truck, through the twists and turns of roller-coaster…”

Lovin’ Art! ft. Anonymous Willpower

Celebrating the Art of Marisa Nowodworski
A night of beautiful art and music… “Lovin’ Art” celebrates the local, homegrown talent of our featured wall artist with an art release party!

Tonight we celebrate the art of Lovin’ Cup’s very own Marisa Nowodworski!

About Marisa…

“I think of my artwork as a display of visual research provoked by psychological and sociological theories. Using emotive states I attempt to emulate joy, heartbreak and any emotion in between to produce work capturing narrative moments and stories representative of individual portrait while still holding a level of anonymity.

No matter the medium, my work cross references techniques from across the board. My paintings and other two dimensional work pull techniques from sculptural aspects, layering color on color to create a textural effect and the illusion of a dramatic space, and three dimensional work pulls from two dimensional techniques, applying patinas and glazes as a painter would to mimic the surface of a classical painter.

My inspiration is drawn from the outcasts, the rebels, and those who are unafraid to defy society in adverse times. The activists who are willing to change the world and bring to light issues for which a solution is required are my soul mates and my motivators. I strive to create my art and live my life in a similar manner to these revolutionaries.”
