The Moho Collective is best known for their live sound, having dedicated the last 9 years to cutting bare-bones records to capture it, and touring throughout the North-East to share it. However, their forthcoming EP, Soma, finds the Rochester trio taking pause from the road to explore everything that an established recording studio has to offer. Captured over several years in the massive 19th century church that is Temperamental Recordings (Geneseo, NY), Moho has surfaced with a fully loaded quiver of brand new, never before heard, acoustic tunes. Soma will be the first release of a multipart series to come from these sessions.
Though the band has established some physical roots in the studio, their music is everything but stationary. Continuing to explore the edges of their world, the songs and sounds of this EP are as nomadic and wanderlust as ever, giving rise to a lushness and sophistication that perhaps the band didn’t have time or space for before. Soma features beautiful augmentations to the traditional Moho sound with french horn, orchestral strings, organ, some inventive percussion, and an array of stringed instruments like dobro, banjo, and steel guitar.
As per tradition, on Friday, October 26, The Moho Collective will be celebrating Soma’s release at The Lovin’ Cup, where they played their very first show in 2009 and have since hosted every album release party to date. Soma will be debuted in its entirety by an 8-piece ensemble featuring members of The Crooked North, The Mighty High and Dry, The Honey Smugglers and Stickybun, preceded with an opening set from Soma Engineer and Co-Producer Mike Brown, and followed by an electric set from The Moho Collective and guests. A copy of the EP will be included with admission.
