9pm – Veluxe
The Veluxe story officially begins in 2001 , when founding members Darren DeWispelaere, Adam Porter, and Steve Daniels decided to shoehorn their far-reaching musical interests into a pop- and indie-leaning rock group designed for tight songwriting as much as for tone, atmosphere, and mood. (Bassist Tim Elswick would join them later. ) At that point, jazz and experimental music factored heavily into the group’s collective background, both as players and listeners, but they chose to direct their efforts in a rock vein, careful not to burden the music with what they saw as indulgence for its own sake. They knew that they could be discreet about introducing new elements to the sound trusting that, eventually, rough edges would emerge on their own without having to force them. The band’s timing was perfect: having just emerged from indie-rock’s explosively fertile late-’90s heyday, there was an abundance of inspiration to draw from. Rochester had long become established as a destination of choice for the countless independent, musically adventurous bands then criss-crossing the country on shoestring budgets. Their message — that vision should be achieved by any available means — wasn’t lost on the band and comes to full fruition on Plan for a Suspended Ceiling.
10:30 – The Heroic Enthusiasts
This heavily allegorical band engages in temporal and philosophical discussions of love. At a deeper layer they use this topic as a mnemonic device to encode a discussion of the nature of the universe, spirituality and the soul.
